Professional Development Session Held

During May 2007 Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) facilitated a Professional Development session for school teachers on the ACC RiverSafe® programme.

The professional development sessions gave teachers the tools and experience to implement the ACC RiverSafe® Programme. The sessions cover off the syllabus, linkages to accredited outdoor providers as an optional outdoor component, flexibility in how the programme can be adapted to run alongside other programmes and the resources available from WSNZ.

Resources available include videos, certificates, stickers and manuals on the programme.

The session while based on RiverSafe® covered generic health and safety, emergency risk management and hazard management principles. It also included an optional river component for those teachers that would like to immerse themselves in the river itself.

WSNZ intends to facilitate further sessions around the country later this year. Communication about these will be sent via post, email and the RiverSafe® website. If you would like to signal your interest in attending please email info@riversafe.org.nz. Alternatively if you would like to discuss RiverSafe® further please contact your regional Water Safety Co-ordinator,

  • Upper North Island Mark Haimona 027-684-0408

  • Lower North Island Roger Scott 04-801-9600

ACC RiverSafe® Provider Forum

The annual ACC RiverSafe® provider forum was held at the Miramar Golf Club in Wellington.

The forum provided an opportunity for providers to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the project. Changes to the new suite of resources were highlighted as were key findings on the recent Process and Impact evaluation carried out on RiverSafe®.

If you would like to consider becoming an accredited RiverSafe® provider please contact info@riversafe.org.nz or phone 04-801-9600.

ACC RiverSafe® Junior Resource and Key Provider Guidelines Updated

With the introduction of the RiverSafe® senior resource in November 2006 the junior resource has subsequently been updated. The update has changed the stylistic layout and contains specific teaching references and linkages to the senior resource. As a result of updates to both manuals, sections of the key provider guidelines have also been amended.

The RiverSafe® junior and senior manuals can be downloaded from the RiverSafe website or if you would like a hardcopy please email info@riversafe.org.nz, or phone 04-801-9600.

NZ Boat Show

National Boatshow 17-20 May 2007

The National Boat Show recently held at the ASB Show Grounds in Ellerslie attracted big crowds over four days in May. The annual event provides an ideal platfrom for organisations like WSNZ to discuss safe boating and fishing practises directly with those involved who enjoy spending time on the water.

This year Mark Haimona, fronted Water Safety New Zealand efforts at the show. Mark, along with representatives from Coastguard Boating Educations, Maritime New Zealand and Environment Waikato, gave a number of presentations on the main stage where he entertained the crowds with interactive competitions involving rescue scenarios and life jacket demonstrations.

Helping WSNZ efforts at the show the team from Fishing Coast to Coast who had a dominant presence in the fishing hall. Mike Rendle and company always push the education and safety message when discussing their extensive fishing knowledge with keen fishos and this year handed out in excess of 300 Safe Fishing packs to patrons. WSNZ would also like to thank Fishing Coast to Coast for generously providing subscription prizes which were eagerly grabbed up by those at the show who Mark though worthy of receiving a prize.

Safe Boating an essential guide

A 2007 edition of this resource is currently being printed due to popular demand. The new edition content has not changed drastically but has included important updates on statistical information and changes regarding key areas such as communications. More emphasis has also been placed on the promotion of Coastguard Boating Education courses, with the inclusion of a number of new specialty courses and correspondence study options now available.

The 2007 edition will be available in early July.  To order your free  copy email info@boatsafe.org.nz.

Fishing NZ

Series 5 of the popular recreational fishing show is currently being shot around New Zealand. Due to air in the middle of October  2007 the show will this year feature 13 episodes and screen both on the Sky Sports Network and Prime TV.

Water Safety New Zealand will again have a strong association with the show.

‘Safe Fishing continues to be a major area of emphasis for our organisation and our input into the show will very much focus on personal responsibility with regard safety while fishing’ explains Chris Robinson.

Presented by super keen fisho/celebrity Pio Terei and show host Adam Clancey the regular Safe Fishing messages will focus on what you can do to ensure each fishing trip concludes with everyone returning safely. Important topics covered include Skipper Responsibility, the importance of Education, Weather, Navigation, Kids on boats and plenty more. The show is a must see for anyone with even a remote interest in fishing!
