Obstacles can include boulders tree trunks bluffs constructions, e.g. bridge supports. Swimmers carried into obstacles can be injured by the impact of the collision.

Obstacles can be undercut with the water flowing downwards under the obstacle and under the surface. Swimmers dragged under an undercut obstacle can be trapped under the surface and drown.
