Strainers

A strainer is an obstacle in the river flow that allows water to flow through it but stops larger objects.

Strainers may be fully or semi-submerged and can be formed by trees (branches, roots) fences narrow spaces between rocks construction debris (e.g. reinforcing steel mesh).

Swimmers can be dragged into and trapped against strainers by the force of the river flow. Even a gentle flow can create a force too strong to escape from.
